Trump Might Be Serious About Canada Becoming The 51st State According To Canadian PM Trudeau
Unpopular Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau told business leaders on Friday that President Donald Trump might be serious about annexing Canada. The reason, Trudeau claims, is that Trump is allegedly keen to control Canada’s natural resources.
Trudeau’s comments were made during a closed-door session at an economic summit his office organized in Toronto, which featured business and labor leaders. Trudeau also emphasized the need for Canada to strengthen its economy.
“I suggest that not only does the Trump Administration know how many critical minerals we have but that may be even why they keep talking about absorbing us and making us the 51st state,” Trudeau said in remarks that were inadvertently broadcast before staff cut the feed.
Trudeau said that Trump appears to view annexation as a viable way for the US to benefit from Canada’s resource wealth, and noted that “It is a real thing.” Trump has mocked Canadian sovereignty repeatedly since winning the 2024 election.
Trump regularly refers to Canada as the “51st state,” and has demeaned Trudeau by calling him “governor,” instead of prime minister. Trump has said tariffs are necessary to force Canadian action on the flow of the drug fentanyl and migrants.
What started out as a joke, has seemed to have taken a more serious turn. It is unlikely that Donald Trump will actually try to make Canada the 51st state, but as we know with Donald Trump, nothing is off the table.
