The US is actively seeking regime change in Cuba by the end of the year

Emboldened by the US ouster of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, the Trump administration is searching for Cuban government insiders who can help cut a deal to push out the Communist regime by the end of the year, people familiar with the matter said.

The Trump administration has assessed Cuba’s economy as being close to collapse and that the government has never been this fragile after losing a vital benefactor in Maduro. Officials don’t have a concrete plan yet on how to end the Communist government.

President Trump has utilized social media to ramp up pressure on the Caribbean nation’s leadership regarding their dwindling resources. On January 11, he posted, “THERE WILL BE NO MORE OIL OR MONEY GOING TO CUBA – ZERO!”

The administration is reportedly leveraging the recent raid in Caracas, which killed 32 Cuban operatives, as an implicit threat of force. Regarding the urgency of the situation, the President posted, “I strongly suggest they make a deal. BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE.”

In meetings held across Miami and Washington, US officials have been working with exile groups to identify potential defectors within the current regime. The Journal’s sources noted that the administration is looking for anyone who can “see the writing on the wall” and help facilitate a transition.

Trump has described the island as a “failing nation” that appears “ready to fall” under the weight of its own economic instability. By securing a deal before 2027, the administration aims to dismantle the nearly seven-decade-old Communist government and cement a definitive foreign policy legacy.

Bringing down the Cuban leadership has been a decades-long dream of many American politicians since the 1959 revolution that brought the country’s famed revolutionary leader, Fidel Castro, to power.

Whether or not the US will be able to fulfill that dream during President Trump’s term remains to be seen.
