President Trump expects that others will be indicted after Comey

President Trump said Friday that he expects more people whom he views as enemies to face criminal indictments, making comments for the first time since the Justice Department indicted former Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey.

“There will be others, look, that’s my opinion. They weaponized the Justice Department like nobody in history,” he said. “What they’ve done is terrible, and so I would, I hope, frankly, I hope they’re other. You can’t let this happen to a country,” Trump said on the South Lawn of the White House.

Comey is facing charges of making a false statement and obstructing a criminal proceeding, both of which he denies. The charges were filed by newly appointed interim U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, Lindsey Halligan, a former personal lawyer for Trump with no prosecutorial experience.

Trump has compared the case against Comey to the charges filed against him on both the federal and state levels. In addition to advocating for charges to be filed against Comey, Trump has also frequently named other political foes that he would like to see prosecuted, including New York Attorney General Letitia James and Sen. Adam Schiff, D-California.

“It’s about justice really, it’s not revenge,” Trump said while departing the White House. “It’s also about the fact that you can’t let this go on. They are sick, radical left people, and they can’t get away with it, and Comey was one of the people.”

“He wasn’t the biggest, but he’s a dirty cop,” Trump added. “He’s always been a dirty cop. Everybody knew it.” “It’s about justice. He lied. He lied a lot,” Trump said. “He gave a very specific answer, and then he verified it numerous times, and he got caught,” the President said.

Comey was indicted by a grand jury following a probe centered on whether he lied to Congress during his Sept. 30, 2020, testimony about his handling of the original Trump–Russia investigation at the FBI, known inside the bureau as “Crossfire Hurricane.”
