President Trump’s approval ratings are slightly lower, but stable

According to Real Clear Politics, President Trump has an approval rating of 46.4%, and a disapproval rating of 50.3%. That is a net negative of 3.9%. While that is not a great place to be in, it is also not a terrible spot.

It should be noted that most Presidents stay in the relatively positive approval rating for most of their first year in office. The American public usually gives newly elected Presidents the benefit of the doubt.

And Mr Trump did begin his Presidency in the positives. He also stayed in the net positive approval rating longer than he did in his first Presidency. When Trump began his first term in 2017, he stayed in the net positive for only a week. He stayed in the positives in his second term for almost 2 months.

When Joe Biden began his term in office, he stayed in the net positives until August of 2021, but dropped into the negatives when the US withdrawal from Afghanistan happened, and stayed there permanently for the rest of his term.

But you can’t compare Trump to other Presidents in terms of approval rating in a like for like way. It could be that polls, which underestimated his support in each of the 3 Presidential elections he was in, always underestimate his support.

Or it could be that a sizable amount of people that say that they disapprove of Trump end up voting for him anyway. Either way, even when Donald Trump had noticeably lower approval ratings in his first term than he does now, he came within 42,000 votes in 3 swing states from winning the 2020 election.

And while Trump’s approval ratings are not high, they show a very high floor. Despite all of the controversies, both real and manufactured by the media and political left, that have happened in Trump’s first 6 months, he still has an approval rating at least in the mid 40s.

And it should be noted that this is with Trump doing controversial things, with tariffs, allies, and conflicts around the world. If his approval rating can stay this stable even during these turbulent times, if we get to a point where things are going a lot more smoothly, it is very possible that his approval ratings could rise to around 50%, which would put the GOP in a great position to win the 2028 election.

We are still extremely early in Trump’s term, and anything can happen. But for now, if you are a Trump supporter, you do not need to worry too much about the President’s approval ratings.
