President Trump “Persuades” Colombia To Retrieve Rejected Migrants

A week into his second term, President Donald Trump has been able to get Colombia to not only retrieve rejected migrants but use their own Presidential plane to retrieve them.

This comes after a diplomatic spat over deportation protocols. President Gustavo Petro initially refused to accept U.S. military flights carrying Colombian nationals even though he had previously approved them, prompting President Donald Trump to impose steep tariffs on Colombian goods.

In response to these sanctions, Petro announced that Colombia would ensure the “dignified return” of its citizens using the presidential aircraft. The about-face from Colombia indicates how much power US economic sanctions have.

President Trump has shown that he will be taking a more hardline approach, both to illegal immigration, and to foreign groups and nations that stand in the way of US interests.

Will Mr. Trump continue his threats of tariffs or economic sanctions? From his actions so far, he probably will.
