Live updates: Will Manchin throw his hat in the ring for the Democratic nomination?

Joe Biden has officially dropped out of the race for the presidency, 24 days after the disastrous debate performance that ultimately led to his political demise. He made the announcement in a letter on X and subsequently decided to endorse his Vice President, Kamala Harris.

But will Harris be the nominee? She may get some challengers.

News broke on Sunday that Sen. Joe Manchin was considering re-registering as an independent and possibly challenging for the nomination. Manchin is the first name to be floated outside of Harris, but he does face an uphill battle. Manchin would have to repair his relationship with many people inside the party, as he notably challenged Biden on pieces of legislation during his administration.

While many notable democrats such as Bill and Hillary Clinton and Josh Shapiro have endorsed Harris, many democrats are still waiting for the dust to settle. For example, Barack Obama and Nancy Pelosi offered their praise for Biden’s decision, but refused to endorse Harris.
