As Biden disputes polling numbers, his approval rating falls to a new low

Joe Biden’s average approval rating has fallen to a new yearly low, according to the Real Clear Politics polling aggregate. This comes following his disastrous first debate performance that has ignited a frenzy among media and Democratic party members alike.

This will not be welcome news for the Biden campaign as they attempt to calm the media storm surrounding Joe Biden on whether he’ll stay in the race or drop out. The Democratic National Convention will take place in August 19th in Chicago and the clock is ticking.

No incumbent has ever won re-election with approval numbers in the 30’s. In an interview with President Biden on Friday, ABC’s George Stephanopoulos brought this up stating, “2020 was a close race. And your approval rating has dropped significantly since then. I think the last poll I saw was at about 36%. The number of Americans who think you’re too old to serve has doubled since 2020. Wouldn’t a clear-eyed political calculus tell you that it’s gonna be much tougher to win in 2024?.” To Which Biden responded, “Not when you’re running against a pathological liar.”

Biden’s disputation of the importance of his polling numbers may be a sign of how insulated he has been from the opinions of ordinary Americans. Biden’s approval rating has been underwater since the withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021, and while it has fluctuated, it seems impossible that it will recover before election day. As calls for Biden to drop out grow, democrats are having important conversations behind the scenes. But Biden remains defiant: “I’m not going anywhere”.
