Will Israel Accept The US’ Peace Plan To End The War In Gaza?
The US believes that Israel will accept their peace plan and the war in Gaza will end soon. The US government said that it has “every expectation” that Israel will accept a ceasefire proposal. This proposal would begin with a six-week cessation of hostilities in Gaza if Hamas takes the deal.
This is a three-part plan unveiled by President Joe Biden last week. The deal would include a “surge” of humanitarian aid, as well as an exchange of some hostages for Palestinian prisoners before a permanent end to the war. The proposal, however, has met with vocal opposition from some members of Israel’s government.
White House National Security Communications Advisor John Kirby said that the US had “every expectation” that Israel would “say yes” to the proposed ceasefire deal if Hamas accepts. “We’re waiting for an official response from Hamas,” he said.
Hamas released a statement reacting positively to the ceasefire proposal. This signals a change in attitude from the terror group. It had long accused the US of siding with Israel and obstructing attempts for a ceasefire. Talks mediated by Egypt, Qatar and others to arrange a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas have repeatedly stalled.
But we are still a long way from a cessation in hostilities. Many ceasefire proposals have been considered. Proposals have even been accepted, but the fighting goes on. But this proposal has a better chance than almost any we have seen during this war to actually succeed.
