Donald Trump has pivoted to the center on abortion. Amid backlash in response to the overturning of Roe v Wade, the former President said that abortion legislation should be left up to the states. He made this announcement amid questions about the legality of abortion in a post Roe America.

“My view is now that we have abortion where everyone wanted it from a legal standpoint, the states will determine by vote or legislation, or perhaps both. And whatever they decide must be the law of the land. In this case, the law of the state,” Mr Trump said in a video posted to his Truth Social account.

“Many states will be different,” said Trump. “Many will have a different number of weeks, or some will have more conservative than others, and that’s what they will be. At the end of the day, this is all about the will of the people.” The former President made this announcement amid fear by some people that there could be a national abortion ban.

These comments clarify a quite moderate, reasonable opinion on abortion from Trump. The idea that the people of individual states will decide how the legality of abortion works. This means that the laws will correspond to the general public consensus. There won’t be a right wing takeover that denies any access to abortion, as many on the left wing are claiming.

It is true that Roe v Wade was overturned because of 3 justices that Donald Trump appointed. But the overturning of Roe v Wade says the same thing that Trump says. The states, not the judiciary, decide abortion laws. This means that abortion laws will be more reflective of the local will of the people. Neither conservative nor liberal states will have their views dominated by a national proclamation one way or the other.

Of course, the abortion debate is not black and white. Consistently, a majority of Americans believe that abortion at certain points should be legal. Also as consistently, a majority of Americans are against late term abortion, something Democrats defend.

In a time of extreme culture wars in America, Donald Trump’s statement is in line with the majority of Americans. It allows Americans to have their views represented. More conservative states will have stricter abortion laws. That reflects their will. More liberal states will have looser, or no, abortion restrictions. That reflects their will.

Donald Trump has pivoted to the center on abortion. While the left wing and mainstream media will try to deflect from that fact, the American people should remember it. Want to resolve culture war issues? Take the compromise position that reflects the will of the people. Donald Trump just did.
