Troops Placed on High Alert After Intelligence Shows Iran Retaliation May be Imminent
The United States is on high alert after intelligence revealed that Iran may retaliate following the the Israeli airstrike that killed senior Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) members near the Iranian embassy in Damascus.
The top commander of the IRGC has vowed retribution from these strikes stating “our brave men will punish the Zionist regime”. The US and Israel aren’t taking this threat lightly. The subject of these possible strikes was reportedly discussed between President Biden and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during their phone call on Thursday. It is unclear at this point if Iran will look to strike Israel itself, or US troops that are scattered across several military bases in the middle east, including Syria.
It’s also unclear if Iran will do much of anything. After a US airstrike killed the commander of the Quds force Qasem Soleimani in January of 2020, Iran vowed to retaliate. However, that retaliation didn’t amount to much of anything and the strike is viewed as one of the biggest accomplishments of Trump foreign policy.
Since the October 7th attack on Israel by Hamas, the possibility of the conflict expanding to a broader war between Israel and Iran has always been a concern for the US. Iran has managed to disrupt the region beyond Hamas. They’ve used their terror proxies such as the Yemeni Houthis to block shipping routes in the Red Sea, leading to increased prices for consumers across the world. The US has attempted to retaliate with strikes in Yemen, but has been unable to deter Iran from continuing its terror operations.
Iran has reportedly also placed its military on high alert. With both sides preparing themselves for a possible broader escalation, the middle east is once again at a boiling point.
