The Winners and Losers of the California Senate Debate
SAN FRANCISCO – In a fairly standard debate for the open California senate seat, the top 4 candidates in the race debated important issues facing California and the Nation. These included the border crisis, homelessness, and the Israel-Hamas war. So who were the winners and losers on the night?
Winner: Steve Garvey
Stuck to his conservative ideals. Made great points on Immigration highlighting that there are already policies in place that work, and is the only candidate who had visited the border recently. “These are three career politicians that have failed the people,” alluding to the fact that the people he shared the stage with have been in office for a combined 60+ years. He also had a great answer on crime and called out the soft on crime D.A.’s that aren’t prosecuting criminals.
Loser: Adam Schiff
Did not sound confident on the night. His answer on Trump being on the ballot was very played out, saying Trump had engaged in an insurrection, although Trump has never been charged with Insurrection and the supreme court case appears to be headed to a 9-0 vote in favor of the former president. He also danced around the question regarding Israel and Hamas, given that he is endorsed by AIPAC. Pretty much sided with Joe Biden on every issue, and didn’t set himself up for success in the progressive state of California.
Winner: Katie Porter
Set herself apart from Adam Schiff as the more competent democratic candidate among the field. Had a good answer on the income inequality and took a dig at politicians who receive corporate tax money, such as Adam Schiff. Had a great unifying moment when saying she would certify the election for Trump, even if he fairly wins election. Called out Adam Schiff for voting against age limits in congress, but voting for age limits for the supreme court.
Loser: Barbara Lee
Did not have a good answer on why she would support a $50 minimum wage, which would obviously destroy small businesses across the state. Seemed very nervous in her answers and refused to support the elimination of Hamas in order to achieve peace in the Hamas-Israel war. Had a good closing statement on why she is running.
