Detroit Pistons Set NBA Record With 27th Straight Loss
The Detroit Pistons made history today. Just not in a good way. The Detroit Pistons lost 118-112 on Tuesday to the Brooklyn Nets. It was their 27th straight loss of the season. This is the most consecutive losses in a single season in NBA history.
The 76ers have the overall record, losing 28 straight, but that spanned the 2014-15 and 2015-16 seasons. Detroit hasn’t won a game since its home opener Oct. 28, against Chicago, and now is 2-28 on the season. Entering Tuesday’s game, Pistons coach Monty Williams couldn’t avoid the topic of the all-time losing mark.
“Again, when you look at records, you think of coaches, but I’m sure the players don’t want that attached to the name on the jersey,” Williams said. Cade Cunningham, the No. 1 overall pick in 2021, finished with a game-high 41 points to go along with 9 rebounds and 5 assists.
After the game, Cunningham addressed the team passionately in the locker room about the things it needs to fix. He told his teammates not to “jump off the boat” and to “stay together” as the losses continues to mount. After the game ended, fans started to chant, “Sell the team! Sell the team!”
The Detroit Pistons have been on the end of a litany of jokes at their expense. At this point, there is a kind of morbid fascination with the team, both from Detroit fans, and fans around the country. Many joke that the Pistons are “dangerous,” because whichever team loses to them will be roasted for the entire season.
The Pistons’ previous loss had already given them the longest losing streak in a single season in NBA history. Only seven other franchises in NBA history have had losing streaks of 20 or more games in the same season. Two more losses, and the Pistons will set the record for longest losing streak in American professional sports history.
