Prime Minister Of Greenland Ready To Talk To Trump

Greenland’s Prime Minister Mute Egede said on Friday that he was ready to speak with US President-elect Donald Trump, who has said he wants control over the country.

Mr. Trump has described US control of Greenland as “an absolute necessity.” At a Copenhagen press conference, when asked if he had had contact with Trump, Egede responded: “No, but we are ready to talk.”

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, who also addressed the press conference, said on Thursday she had asked for a meeting with Trump, but did not expect it to happen before his inauguration.

The U.S. maintains a military base in the northern part of the strategically important territory. This comes as Greenland has drifted away from Denmark, the country that owns the territory.

While it doesn’t look like a majority of Greenlanders want to be part of the US at the moment, the population could be enticed by US protection, and US subsidies for the territory.

And the fact that Greenland has accepted being a territory of Denmark, and not an independent country, for its entire history, means that becoming a territory of the US is not something beyond the pale.

While it at first seemed like a joke, President-elect Trump’s persistence in lobbying for Greenland to become part of the United States shows us that this is very much something that he wants to become a reality.

And just because the Prime Minister of Greenland is ready to speak with Trump does not mean they are already creating a plan for a US purchase of the territory. Their talk might just be a feeling out phase.

There are still many hurdles to get through, but what was once thought of as a joke, and then impossible, is now in the realm of possibility. No one can turn the unthinkable into a possibility like Donald Trump can.
