Joe Biden Thinks He Could Have Beaten Donald Trump
President Joe Biden has less than 3 weeks left in his term. When he leaves office, the 82 year old will have completed his life in politics. A life in politics that extends over 50 years, starting when he was elected to the Senate in 1972.
Despite his 52 years in and around Washington, Mr Biden could have prolonged his political life, had he stayed in, and somehow won the 2024 election. Whether he would have been able to complete a subsequent 4 year term is very debatable.
But regardless of whether he would have been able to competently serve as President another 4 years, Mr Biden reportedly believes that he could have beaten President-elect Donald Trump had he stayed in the race.
Biden thinks that he made a mistake dropping out of the race on July 21, 2024. This of course assumes that he made the choice to drop out on his own. He obviously didn’t, as for weeks he fought off calls within his own party to drop out, up until the final days before he actually did drop out.
He only dropped out when major Democratic donors threatened to withhold donations, something that would have made it impossible for the President to have a chance in the November election.
Biden has been careful to avoid criticizing Harris (without a doubt because she is a black woman), but has privately claimed that the 2024 election would have gone a different way had Biden stood up to the pressure to withdraw from within his party.
Harris supporters naturally dispute this assertion. And while their assertions that Harris ran a great campaign, or that Harris is intelligent and Presidential are laughable, they are probably right in their view that Biden would not have beaten Donald Trump.
In fact, it is almost certain that Biden would have lost to President-elect Donald Trump by an even wider margin than Harris did. In fact, Biden internal polling apparently showed that Trump would have beaten Joe Biden in a landslide, winning over 400 electoral votes.
For context, an electoral map in which Donald Trump wins over 400 electoral votes has Donald Trump winning every state he won in the 2024 election against Kamala Harris, plus New Mexico, Minnesota, Virginia, New Jersey, New Hampshire, Maine at large, New York and Illinois.
Yes, you read that right. Joe Biden’s internal polling had Donald Trump possibly beating him in Illinois and New York, Democratic strongholds, and home of Chicago and New York City, respectively. The scale of such a defeat would have been earth shattering.
Not only would it have left Democrats humiliated, it would have led to a much larger Republican House and Senate majority. Republicans would almost certainly have over 230 House seats, and likely 57-58 Senate seats in an environment where Donald Trump won New York and Illinois.
That would have put the Senate in Republican control for at least a decade, and likely longer, which would have been devastating for the Democrats’ hopes at moving the Supreme Court to the left.
Now, while it is very likely that Trump would have beaten Biden had Biden stayed in the race, there is no way to know for sure. President-elect Trump could go down as the most important American of the 21st Century, but his political victories we never sure things.
For all his charisma, fight and boldness, Mr Trump still had about half the country who despised him. Who knows? Maybe Joe Biden could have pulled out a miracle had he stayed in. Ah, who are we kidding? Had Joe Biden stayed in the race, it would have not ended well for him.
But we can allow the soon to be former President to believe he could have beaten Donald Trump again. After all, he is the only person who has ever actually beaten Donald Trump in an election. For all of his failures, that is one positive thing that Joe Biden will always be able to point to.
