Kamala Harris holds a slim lead in national polls – Here’s why Democrats are still panicking

Kamala Harris currently holds a 1.7 point lead over Donald Trump in the average of national polls, according to the Real Clear Polling aggregate.

Of the 4 polls released in the past 7 days, Kamala is +3 in the CBS poll, +2 in the ABC/Ipsos and Harvard-Harris poll, and tied in the NBC poll.

So why the panic?

Democrats realize that they may not be in the polling position they need to be in, this close to election day. Joe Biden was ahead by nearly 10 points in the national polls at this point in 2020. Biden ended up only winning the popular vote by 4.5%. He narrowly won the Electoral College, with states like Arizona, Georgia, and Wisconsin being decided by a combined 44k votes.

Had Donald Trump won those states, the Electoral College would’ve been a 269-269 tie, and the vote would’ve been sent back to the House of Representatives, ensuring a Trump victory.

According to the Real Clear Polling Average of top battleground states, Trump currently holds a slim lead in 6/7 states, Wisconsin being the sole state in the Harris category.

In 2020, pre-election polls had their largest error in 40 years, per Vanderbilt University Research. This was largely driven by Donald Trump’s ability to turn out low-propensity voters, a demographic that historically doesn’t participate in public opinion polling. In 2024, Trump is once again banking on these voters to turn out for him in record numbers.

In states like Michigan and Wisconsin, Democrat senate candidates have been alerting folks that that their internal polls have Kamala Harris down in their respective states.

Barack Obama paid a visit to Michigan last week and gave a controversial talk at a Harris field office about black men appearing hesitant to vote for Kamala Harris. “We have not yet seen the same kinds of energy and turnout in all corners of our neighborhoods and communities as we saw when I was running. Now, I also want to say that that seems to be more pronounced with the brothas’.”

Can Harris remedy the situation?

The Harris Campaign is planning 19 campaign stops within the span of 6 days in MI, GA, PA, NE, WI, and NC.

The Campaign is also planning more media appearances after last weeks media blitz, where she appeared on Call Her Daddy, Howard Stern, 60 Minutes, Stephen Colbert, and The View.

On Wednesday, she will be appear on Fox News where she’ll sit down with Brent Baier. On Oct. 23rd she’s scheduled for a town hall on CNN.

With 22 days to go, it is officially a race to the finish.
