Donald Trump Is Siding With Mike Johnson Over The Bid To Oust The Speaker
Donald Trump is siding with Mike Johnson over the bid to oust the Speaker. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R., Ga.) laid out a list of demands for House Speaker Mike Johnson on Tuesday. But she signaled that she was wavering on whether to force a vote to oust him this week.
This comes after blowback from other Republicans in Congress, and former President Trump. Greene said that her requests were very reasonable, especially considering that “the American people gave us a Republican majority” in the House of Representatives.
She also demanded no more money for Ukraine. Greene characterized not sending more money to Ukraine as doing “what the majority of the majority want.” This is referring to the fact that Republicans are the majority in the House, and a majority of Republicans do not want more money to go to Ukraine.
But it should be noted that if you take the sizable Republican minority that supports continued aid to Ukraine, and add it to the Democratic Caucus, the majority of elected Congress supports continued aid to Ukraine. Johnson and Greene met earlier today to try to come to an agreement to prevent a motion to vacate.
Donald Trump’s backing of Johnson takes a bit of the wind out of the sails of those trying to replace the Speaker. With continued widespread support in the Republican Party, Donald Trump’s backing will likely blunt constituent pressure on elected officials to replace another Republican Speaker.
All of this occurs of course amidst a tight race between Trump and Biden and continued attacks from the left wing on Donald Trump. In these very closely divided political times, it is important for the GOP to stay united if they want to win this November.
Donald Trump is siding with Mike Johnson over the bid to oust the Speaker. Will this save Mike Johnson’s job? There are no guarantees, but it certainly helps.
