Did Donald Trump Make A Mistake Agreeing To A June Presidential Debate Moderated By CNN?
Did Donald Trump make a mistake agreeing to a June Presidential debate moderated by CNN? In his bid to make sure that President Biden doesn’t weasel out of debating, Trump may have given too much. He agreed to only 2 debates, not 3. And he also agreed to have the CNN debate in June, well before the election.
This is important because even if Biden flubs the debate, it will be so long before the election, that the general population may have forgotten it by the time voting starts. We know the Joe Biden is not the most cognitively sharp person in the country. And we know that his handlers do not want him going long periods of time not speaking from a script.
This debate date and choice of moderator might be the perfect plan to safeguard Biden. We know CNN has a long history of anti-Trump bias. While Jake Tapper and Dana Bash, the two CNN moderators of this debate, are not as bad as others on the network, they have long had unfavorable coverage of the 45th President. Microphones will also be cut off. This likely will lead to Donald Trump being cut off quite a lot.
At a time when Donald Trump is leading Joe Biden in every sing state, the current President needs all the help he can get. No doubt that the mainstream media, as well as almost all institutions and power centers will ramp up their anti-Trump actions. We are not in a fair and balanced environment. And Donald Trump and his campaign need to be aware of this and react accordingly.
We should remember that Trump might have been forced into this deal, or felt like he was. Joe Biden had been making suggestions that he might not agree to debate Donald Trump. Using the ridiculous claim that Donald Trump, a former President, was dangerous for democracy, and thus shouldn’t be given a platform, the Biden campaign had been insinuating that Biden might not debate.
Trump offering extremely favorable terms to Biden might have been a decision to make sure Biden does debate. It is important that Joe Biden participate in a live debate and be held somewhat accountable. But we know that Biden is much livelier during debates than usual, possibly taking energy boosters.
Either way, the Trump campaign needs to play this smart. Odds are, as usual, stacked against the 45th President. Did Donald Trump make a mistake agreeing to a June Presidential debate moderated by CNN? While the debate moderators will favor Biden, this has always been the case against Trump. He is used to it, and knows how to win in spite of it. Will he do it again in 2024? We will see this November.
