Israel And Hezbollah Are Flirting With A Dangerous Middle East Escalation
Israel and Hezbollah are flirting with a dangerous middle east escalation. The conflict between the two sides has escalated ever since the October 7th terrorist attack against Israel. Hezbollah is a Lebanese terrorist group and political party that is closely allied with Iran.
Since the October 7th attacks, and Israel’s subsequent incursion into Gaza, Hezbollah has launched missiles and drones into Israel. Fortunately, Israel has so far been able to shoot them down. On Wednesday, Israel said that it struck about 40 sites linked to Hezbollah in southern Lebanon. Israel and Hezbollah have skirmishes nearly every day.
US officials are even warning that the potential for an Israel-Hezbollah escalation is “acute.” Avoiding a full scale war between Israel and Hezbollah has been a priority for the US since the war began. The Biden administration has sent a senior White House official on several trips to the region to calm tensions.
Since October 7th, Israeli air strikes have killed 276 Hezbollah fighters. Tens of thousands of Lebanese and Israeli civilians have been pushed from their homes. Israeli airstrikes have hit the Lebanese capital Beirut, where a strike killed a senior Hamas leader in January.
As tensions between Israel and Iran grow, so do tensions between Israel and Iran’s biggest terrorist client, Hezbollah. Not much separates us from all out war in the Middle East. Israel and Hezbollah are flirting with a dangerous middle east escalation. Averting a major war is only possible if cooler heads prevail.
