Former President Donald Trump Says He Can’t Secure Bond For The $464 Million Civil-Fraught Judgement
Former President Donald Trump says he can’t secure bond for the $464 million civil-fraught judgement. Trump’s lawyers said on Monday that the former president has been unable to obtain a bond to guarantee payment of a $454 million civil-fraud judgment against him, despite trying to negotiate a deal with some of the largest suretors in the world.
The judgement was ordered by the state judge last week. Mr Trump said that the judgement was so large that sureties wouldn’t accept real estate as collateral. They would require cash to guarantee the bond. “Defendants’ ongoing diligent efforts have proven that a bond in the judgment’s full amount is ‘a practical impossibility,’” Trump’s lawyers wrote.
The former President’s lawyers also noted that “The amount of the judgment, with interest, exceeds $464 million, and very few bonding companies will consider a bond of anything approaching that magnitude.” Mr Trump is currently appealing the judgement. But the total amount will gain interest as the process plays out.
Trump’s lawyers argued that there are only a “handful” of surety companies that are approved by the Treasury Department to underwrite a bond as high as this one. The fact that sureties won’t accept collateral or hard assets makes the payment a “practical impossibility.”
This is not the first time that Donald Trump has been under legal assault. While there are certain legal issues that Trump has that could be argued as legitimate, much of the legal attacks against him have been without precedent in American history. Furthermore, there has been a long history of double standards in the application of rules to Trump compared to all other Presidents.
The question is, how will the public view these developments? Will they see it as more evidence of Donald Trump’s legal woes? Or will they see it as yet another of the never ending unfair attacks on the former President? The polls on this question is mixed.
Former President Donald Trump says he can’t secure bond for the $464 million civil-fraught judgement. How will this play out? It is difficult to say. There are so many moving parts, that predicting what will happen with any type of certainty is impossible. One thing is for sure though. We are in for a wild ride in 2024.
