Three Key Races to Watch For On Super Tuesday
California Senate Primary
Californian’s will go to the polls tomorrow and take the first step in filling the late Dianne Feinstein’s former Senate seat. California is an open primary state where the top two candidates, regardless of political party, will move on to compete against each other in the General Election. The race looks to be down to the two Democrat members of congress, Adam Schiff and Katie Porter and one Republican, Steve Garvey, a former Pro Baseball Player and Actor.
In the California Senate debates Garvey has pitched himself (no pun intended) as the true outsider candidate that can combat the serious issues plaguing the state of California, such as homelessness, drug addiction, and soft on crime policies that are causing many to flee the state. Schiff is clearly the establishment figure. He’s been endorsed by state establishment figures such as Barbara Boxer and Nancy Pelosi, and is campaigning heavily on his prior investigations into Former President, Donald Trump. Schiff has been spending tens of millions of dollars on ads across the state, with many of them targeting and attempting to prop up Steve Garvey, his preferred opponent in a general election. Katie Porter has campaigned from the left, and attempted to lock down the progressive vote in the state. She has proudly boasted that she hasn’t taken any Corporate PAC money and called for a “lasting bi-lateral ceasefire” in Gaza.
North Carolina Governor Primary
The North Carolina Governor’s primary looks poised to be dominated by Democratic Attorney General Josh Stein, and Republican Lt. Gov Mark Robinson, who lead in their respective parties polls quite significantly. Many are saying this could be a litmus test for the enthusiasm of both parties going into the November General Election. Although Donald Trump won the state in both 2016 and 2020, and the state legislature is controlled by Republicans, The Tarheel State has a history of electing Democratic Governors, with Roy Cooper currently serving as the chief executive of the state. However, Joe Biden is deeply unpopular in the state and Trump endorsed Robinson will look to capitalize on that. The turnout figures on both sides are what to lookout for in this one.
Texas Democratic Senate Primary
Rep. Colin Allred is expected to come out on top in the Texas Democratic Senate Primary. The real question is if he’ll reach the 50% threshold needed to avoid a May runoff, which will likely have him going up against State. Sen Roland Gutierrez. The primary field is crowded, and there is a possibility that the voters supporting other candidates could coalesce around Gutierrez in a runoff. The winner will face Sen. Ted Cruz in the November General Election. Polling data has been mixed, but there are some signs that Allred could pull off an upset in the state, if he were to advance to the general election.
