Is it Curtains for the Nikki Haley Campaign?
NEW HAMPSHIRE – While late Monday it was revealed that all 6 votes have gone to Nikki Haley in Dixville Notch, she’s still a heavy underdog in the first in the nation primary of New Hampshire. According to the RCP Polling Average, she currently sits 18 points behind Donald Trump. A near insurmountable deficit in the Granite State. Trump is seemingly running away with it, and Republicans seem to be coalescing around him as the presumptive nominee.
On Monday, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis suspended his campaign and endorsed Trump, even taking a shot at Nikki Haley in his message to supporters, stating “we can’t go back to the old republican guard of yesteryear, a repackaged form of warmed over corporatism that Nikki Haley represents.” He joined Doug Burgum, Vivek Ramaswamy, and Tim Scott, all former 2024 Republican candidates that have endorsed Trump.
On the other hand, Haley has struggled to rack up the endorsements on the Republican side. The only 2024 candidate that’s endorsed her is Asa Hutchinson, someone who managed to only get around 100 votes in the Iowa Caucus. Anti-Trump candidate, Chris Christie refused to endorse her, even getting caught on a hot mic saying “She’s gonna get smoked”, prior to suspending his own campaign. However, Nikki Haley has secured the endorsement of the current governor of New Hampshire, Chris Sununu, in hopes that enough voters will be happy with his performance and opt to trust his instincts.
Yet in the end, even if Nikki Haley pulls out a shock win in New Hampshire, it likely will not matter. Trump is all but certain to win South Carolina, currently polling in the 60’s according to 538. Nikki Haley was the governor of South Carolina from 2011-2017, and the general rule is that if you can’t win your own home state in a primary, then how are you going to win a national election?
So yes, it likely is curtains for the Haley Campaign. It was a formidable effort, and finishing second to a former president is nothing to be ashamed of. For the good of her own political future, it’s probably best for her to bow out after New Hampshire.
