Florida State Humiliated In 63-3 Loss To Georgia In Orange Bowl
The Florida State Seminoles, who many say were snubbed of a spot in the College Football National semifinals, were obliterated by Georgia today in the Orange Bowl, 63-3. Of course, context is needed. Florida State was without most of their starters, who decided to skip the game.
But one must ask themselves, would Alabama’s backups have lost to Georgia 63-3? Do we really think a full strength FSU team would have beaten Georgia? There’s no way to know for sure, but it seems pretty clear that Georgia and Alabama, who beat Georgia, are simply better football teams than Florida State.
But with that said, even if Georgia and Alabama are better than Florida State, does that matter? Shouldn’t who makes it to the top 4 be based on achievement on the field? If we are to play games on paper, why even play? On the field, Florida State won all 13 of their regular season games. In sports, if a team that, we know is on paper worse, does better than another team, do we say that their win doesn’t count?
But at the same time, in college football, you don’t have teams playing the same schedule. One could easily argue that Florida State would not have been undefeated had they had Alabama or Georgia’s schedule. But then again, we were an Auburn choke away from Alabama having 2 losses in their season. It’s a tough call to make, because you have two compelling points clashing.
Florida State should have gotten into the top 4 based on play on the field. Alabama and Georgia probably get into the top 4 over Florida State based on who we know is actually a better football team. As we know, speculation will always be a part of college football.
There are too many teams to make an even schedule, or for everyone to play each other. Subjectivity will always be there at some level. We can only hope that most of the time the true best teams are picked, and every team worthy has a chance to compete for the National title.
