House GOP Nominates Mike Johnson For House Speaker

The House GOP nominated Representative Mike Johnson (R-LA) for House Speaker. The decision was made late on Tuesday night. Johnson represents Louisiana’s 4th district, and is Vice Chair of the House Republican Conference.

This nomination comes hours after the party nominated Tom Emmer, who himself dropped out of the race following opposition from former President Donald Trump. Johnson bested Representative Byron Donalds of Florida for the nomination.

Mike Johnson is the 4th nominee for House Speaker, after the failed nominations of Steve Scalise (R-LA), Jim Jordan (R-OH), and Tom Emmer (R-MN). Johnson won 128 votes in the Republican Conference nominating process, but it remains to be seen if he can win the 217 votes needed to become Speaker.

The vote on whether Johnson becomes Speaker is set to take place tomorrow. Freedom Caucus chair Rep. Scott Perry (R-PA) was optimistic about Johnson, telling reporters, “I think we’re gonna have a Speaker. If you’re going to change the status quote here, you’re gonna have to shatter the current power establishment, which is what you’re seeing right now.”

Previous Speaker nominees Jim Jordan and Steve Scalise have given Representative Johnson their support. “He’s done a great job on the Judiciary Committee. Always prepared. Always ready to take on the Swamp. The House needs a Speaker. And it needs to be him,” House Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) wrote on X about Johnson.

House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-LA) said in a statement that Johnson “is honest, hardworking, and principled – he is a great man and will make a great Speaker.” The House GOP has nominated Mike Johnson for House Speaker. Will it be 4th time’s a charm? We will see tomorrow.
