Coco Gauff Wins The 2023 US Open, Signaling An Era Of American Dominance Of Tennis

Coco Gauff wins the 2023 US Open, signaling an era of American dominance of tennis. Gauff is only 19 years old, and had already been the the 2022 French Open final at the age of 18. Coco Gauff could very well be winning Grand Slams for the next 10-15 years.

In addition to Gauff, Madison Keys, Jessica Pegula, Peyton Stearns, Jennifer Brady and Sofia Kenin are Americans who have been and around Grand Slam finals. With Ben Shelton, Frances Tiafoe, Tommy Paul and Taylor Fritz on the men’s side, American tennis is rising to the top once again.

If Madison Keys hadn’t blew her 1 set and break lead against Aryna Sabalenka, this would have been an all American final. Coco Gauff first broke onto the tennis scene as a 15 year old when she made the 4th round of Wimbledon. Since then, she has had an incredible amount of pressure on her to follow through and win a Grand Slam.

She’d had her ups and downs, but it took 3 years before she made a Grand Slam final, the 2022 French Open. In the final, she lost to Isa Swiatek. Gauff actually went out early in the last major, 2023 Wimbledon, so it was a bit of a surprise to see Gauff win this tournament.

At the beginning of the match, Aryna Sabalenka took control, overpowering Gauff at times. When Sabalenka won the first set 6-2, it looked like she was on her way to victory. But Coco Gauff stayed with it, and displayed an incredible ability to track down balls and make Sabalenka hit one, two, three extra winners to win the point.

This proved too much for Sabalenka, and caused her to make multiple unforced errors, trying to hit the perfect winner. Eventually, Gauff took control and went up a double break in the 3rd set. She lost her next service game, but then won the break right back to go up 5-2.

When that happened, it looked inevitable that Gauff would win it. And win it she did, winning her final service game without losing a point. Nothing is guaranteed, but at 19, Gauff could very well be poised to be the top women’s player in the world for the next decade. But she will face fierce competition, and Aryna Sabalenka and others will be right there.

American tennis is on the up. As Coco Gauff won the 2023 US Open, it signaled a possible era of American tennis dominance coming up. Let’s wait and see.
