Mexico’s 3rd Place Game Sees Almost Empty Stadium. Sad!

After their humiliating 3-0 loss to the United States on Thursday, Mexico plays their 3rd place game in front of an almost empty stadium. It is indicative of the sorry state of Mexican soccer. Their team is horrendous, and their fans are demoralized.

There is a sense that Mexico has not only no present, but no future in the sport. The United States has been better than them for the last 3 years, and the United States is still not even close to as good as they could be. It looks like Mexico has hit their very low ceiling.

To be fair, a 3rd place game for a Nations League competition will never get a ton of fans. But Mexico fans in the US are so ubiquitous that you’d expect a much fuller stadium. This is quite a sad state of affairs, considering that Mexico does not excel in any sport besides soccer. And Mexico has arguably never excelled in soccer.

The state of Mexican soccer is both sad and hilarious. Sad because of the aforementioned despondence from Mexico fans and lack of success in any other sport. But hilarious because Mexico fans have long bragged about being better than a nation where soccer is the 4th or 5th most popular sport, and now have been humiliated in the sport.

I would say that we hope for Mexican soccer to rise, but we don’t. I would say that I see a day where Mexico makes it far in a World Cup, but I don’t. Let’s see how long Mexico stays this bad!
